Farafina Books announces its unique way of commemorating the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence. We have chosen to mark the occasion by promoting literacy and education amongst Nigeria’s youths.
On the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th of October 2010, Farafina Books will be holding book readings by celebrities in selected public schools in Lagos. We, at Farafina, believe that education is the bedrock of any nation and as such should be a priority. To this end, we conceived this idea to help revive the reading culture, which is fast becoming extinct amongst our youth, and consequently, improve educational standards in our schools. To stimulate interest amongst the students, we have contacted some celebrities – Omawumi, Naeto C, Rooftop Mcs and Tosyn Bucknor – to partner with us. On that day, a celebrity would visit the school and read a selected portion of their favorite African book to the students. After this, there will be an interactive session between the celebrity guests and the students. The guest will also give a short talk on the importance of reading and education. It is our hope that through this event, students would be inspired to read which research has shown translates to an improved academic performance.
Farafina Books will also donate copies of Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus – which was recently selected on the WAEC list for Literature – to each school we visit and award gift packs to top literature students in that school.
